WH Lockwasher

Similar to the W series except for thickness, the resulting diameter over tangs, and the direction in which the key is bent, these washers provide a little greater strength which is advantageous in few applications and provide for use of a washer where the designers and engineers do not wish to have the keyway cut under the components held.

The key is bent in the same direction as the multi-tangs, opposite from the W series. This is helpful if one wishes not to cut the keyway under the bearing or other power transmission components; also, if one wishes to use two locknuts for greater support against axial thrust or to gain more consistent squareness of the second locknut against a very flat and square bearing surface than would be obtained with a washer between the inner race and the locknut.

The direction of the key also permits use of a hardened key washer to engage in the same keyway between a bearing inner race and the WH lockwasher for even greater support of heavy loads for which tapered bearings are very often installed. Often the flat hardened key washer is used rather than two locknuts.
